Starting AskALib is an experiment.  A number of academic libraries offer Ask A Librarian chat, online, or virtual reference services. Chat services, which is how I will lovingly refer to them, have become an important tool in reaching a growing number of online library users (patrons, if you prefer).

My hope is that AskALib will offer a collaborative venue to discuss topical issues and ideas related to chat and other online reference services in academic libraries. Topics may include practical information on developing chat services, discussions about applications and tools, FAQs, or commentary.
